ASTS recognizes and honors ASTS junior members for their efforts in basic and clinical research by awarding travel prizes to the annual State of the Art Winter Symposium. The Vanguard Prize is designed to identify the best clinical and basic research manuscripts from young investigators in the previous year.  Recipients will be recognized during the Awards Ceremony at the Winter Symposium and will present their research during the Oral Abstract Session.

Award amount: Two awards are available annually, contingent upon the availability of funds and the receipt of qualified applications. Award recipients receive:  

  • $1,875 honorarium 
  • hotel accommodations for three nights (room and tax only) 
  • All-access registration to the Winter Symposium 

Eligibility

  • Self-nominations are accepted.
  • Clinical Instructor or Assistant Professor surgical faculty member at a UNOS approved (or Canadian equivalent) transplant center within 5 years of completing transplant surgery fellowship.
  • ASTS Regular or Trainee Fellow Member.
  • Nominee must be first or last author on the chosen manuscript
  • Previous recipients of the Vanguard Prize are not eligible.

Submission requirements:

  • CV of the nominee
  • Copy of research paper

Review criteria:

The Vanguard Prize is scored based on the following weighted categories:

  1.  Methodology 20%
  2.  Originality 10%
  3.  Overall impact 50%
  4.  Significance 20%

Categories are scored from 1-5 where 1 is the best and 5 is unacceptable. Comment sections are provided for additional remarks.
